How the AI guide works, what it remembers, and what it does in a crisis
The guide in your member area is an AI (Claude, made by Anthropic), not a person. It says so when you start, again every three hours, and whenever you ask. It is for entertainment and self-reflection, it isn't a therapist or a counsellor, and it may not be suitable for minors. Midnight is for adults, 18 and over.
What it remembers
A few minutes after a conversation ends, the guide keeps short notes of it: what you asked about, and things you told it about your life. It never keeps anything about health, sexuality, religion or politics, and nothing from a conversation in which you mentioned a crisis. You can read every note under the chat, forget any of them, or turn memory off. The notes stay with your account and are deleted with it.
If you mention suicide, self-harm or an eating disorder
Every message you send is checked for words about suicide, self-harm and eating disorders before the AI sees it. If any are found, the AI doesn't answer. You get a fixed message instead, pointing to people who can help right now:
- in the US, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line);
- in the UK and Ireland, call Samaritans on 116 123;
- anywhere else, find your local helpline at findahelpline.com;
- if you're in danger now, call your local emergency number (911 in the US, 112 in the EU).
That conversation isn't used for the guide's notes. We count how many times the message was shown each day, with no name and no message attached, and we report the yearly total where the law asks for it.
No offers when you're having a hard time
For 30 days after that message, and for 72 hours after your own words show a hard time (a breakup, a death, a lost job), we don't offer you anything to buy: no upgrade, no extra reading, no offer to come back. You can still cancel, downgrade, get a refund or delete your account at any time.
